Beermats From the Bison


Listening to blues in Cafe Bizon last night, two artists I'd not heard before impressed me enough to have one of the barmen consign their names to the back of a couple of Bockor beermats.

Anastasio Trey is an American guitarist most noted for his work with the rock band Phish. Reminiscent of Santana with elements of Zappa and Jazz thrown into the mix, I'd recommend checking him out. The double Live album Plasma looks like a good place to start listening to Trey and Live at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995 sounds like a good starter for ten for Phish.

Moving on to beermat number two, Susan Tedeschi reminded me of Bonnie Raitt but without the husky vocals. Susan's music ranges from out and out blues to an almost gospel sound. Again, highly recommended. Nominated for a Grammy, her new album Hope and Desire looks like it could be worth taking for a spin, I look forward to adding it to the collection.

Speaking of beermats, the one under this cascade doesn't look like it's going to cope with the beery deluge, even with Keri's attempted rescue mission. Nice pouring Phil.

Am I mad, in a coma, or have I just been listening to the Life On Mars Original Soundtrack CD. Most excellent. Not surprising really as the picking ground for material, the 70's, has been identified as the best decade for popular music. My only criticism of it is the lack of any Hawkwind , not that I'm biased, especially as the show has featured Brainstorm , Silver Machine , Urban Guerrilla , Ejection and You Shouldn't Do That over its two seasons. Still there's always the potential for a second soundtrack album at some stage in the future and plenty of material still to chose from. The 100 Best and Absolute Greatest Heavy Metal Albums in the World, Ever.

As I've just about completed my collection of 100 CDs culled from Jacelyn Bond's damn fine book, and bastard of a charade title, The 100 Best and Absolute Greatest Heavy Metal Albums in the World, Ever , I thought it was about time I blogged the list to aid anyone else who wants to make their world a little heavier. Collecting the albums has been a long strange trip through the annals of rock history and taken me through classics by the likes of Sabbath, AC/DC and Deep Purple to Scandinavian Death Metal. Yes the choices are debateable but the book is a great way of discovering some wonderful music to headbang like a maniac to. It's got some notable omisions too, in particular a certain Black Country band who most would argue are the greatest rock and roll band of all timel and who cast a giant blimp shaped shaddow over the genre.
